Abstract: Compiled initially in the late 9th century during the reign of King Alfred the Great, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle is the earliest continuous historical narrative recorded in any Germanic vernacular. Surviving across multiple distinct manuscripts, this collection of annals traces the origins of the English people from antiquity through the Norman Conquest and beyond. The Chronicle is not merely a chronicle of events, but as a dynamic cultural artifact that helped forge a unified national identity and legitimize the West Saxon dynasty. Despite variations in local reporting and editorial biases, these texts remain the foundational primary source for studying early medieval English history, language, and literature.
